The liver has two large sections, called the right and the left lobes. The gallbladder sits under the liver, along with parts of the pancreas and intestines. The liver and these organs work together to digest, absorb, and process food.
Our livers are responsible for many important functions in our bodies. One of the most vital functions of the liver is the removal of toxins from the body. They act as the filter to our bodies, removing the ammonia created by our colons, as well as alcohol and medicines. In addition to filtering our blood, the liver is the store house for fats, sugars, and minerals, as well as the place that fats are broken down. A diet that is too high in fats or sugars could result in an unhealthy liver, unable to properly filter our blood.
Amazingly enough, whenever our liver has problems, it also affects our skin. Take for example, Jaundice (yellowish discoloration of the skin). It is caused by high levels of bilirubin in the body. If your liver is not doing its job of breaking down toxins efficiently they must be eliminated from your body by other means – in many cases they come out through your skin. When excessive toxins build up in the deeper layers of the skin this causes inflammation to occur and this can manifest as:
Hyper pigmentation (darkening of the skin)
Aging and wrinkling of the skin
Red, itchy rashes on the skin
Eating the right kinds of foods and staying away from excessive substances usage such as alcohol, tobacco, white sugar, coffee, and if you are taking maintenance medications, check with your physician about the possible side effects of the medicines you are taking for liver damage. Because their are drugs, through long term use, can cause liver damage.
Foods that Help the Liver
Here are some of the foods that help in liver function and detoxification:
Garlic has the ability to activate liver enzymes that help flush out the toxins from our body. It also has selenium which helps in liver cleansing. Be sure it is crushed garlic, and let it sit for 5 minutes, 10 minutes optimally, because the enzyme alliinase will be formed that further help in the keeping your liver healthy.

Supplements that Help the Liver and the Skin
There are also supplements that help promote liver function.
1. C24/7 Naturaceuticals
I have been using this product for a year now and it has greatly improved my health in a lot of ways. It has 22,000 phyto-nutrients that help detoxify the body, and is greatly rich in antioxidants that help promote a healthy body by going to the very core, our cells. It helps our cells be in a healthy state so that the whole of our body is at optimum performance. It also includes the fruits and vegetables that I mentioned above that greatly improve liver function.
Glutathione is an antioxidant enzyme often referred to as the body's "master antioxidant" due to its central role in protecting the
body's cells from free radical damage. Glutathione is composed of the amino acids cysteine, glutamine and glycine and is
concentrated in the liver, although it carries out its work throughout the body. This important enzyme is involved in protecting
cells from environmental toxins, drugs and alcohol as well as toxins produced by the body itself as a result of normal metabolism. One glutathione supplement is Whitelight. It is a sublingual spray more potent than its capsule counterpart because it goes directly to our system instead of being broken down by the stomach. Amazingly enough, glutathione has a whitening effect which can help you keep a healthy looking glow.
3. Milk thistle
Milk thistle is well-known for its ability to heal and protect the liver. It belongs to the Asteraceae or daisy family and is native to the Mediterranean region. Milk thistle seeds contain antioxidants known as flavonolignans.
